It all started with a single cast-iron skillet and an obsession with perfectly seasoned hot chicken. Founder Joe Martinez grew up watching his grandmother turn simple ingredients into extraordinary meals in her small South Philly kitchen — and that spirit never left him.

After years working in some of Philadelphia's most respected kitchens, Joe decided the city needed something rawer, bolder, and more soul-satisfying. In 2016, Hangry Joe's opened its first window on Market Street — just a counter, a fryer, and a line around the block.

Today, hangry joe's has grown into a full restaurant experience beloved across Philadelphia and beyond, but the philosophy remains unchanged: real ingredients, unapologetic flavor, and food that actually makes you feel something.

From a small window counter to a beloved Philadelphia institution — here's how hangry joe's grew into what it is today.

2016

The Window Opens

Joe Martinez opens a small takeout window on Market Street, Philadelphia. Armed with one recipe and a cast-iron fryer, he sells out on the very first day. The line doesn't stop for a week.

2018

First Full Restaurant

Demand forces a bigger move. Hangry Joe's opens its first full sit-down restaurant at 300 Market St — complete with a full menu, a proper bar, and seating for 60 guests. The hot chicken sandwich becomes a local legend.

2020

Delivery & Catering Launch

In response to changing times, hangry joe's launches citywide delivery and a full catering service. Sales grow by 140% as Philadelphia discovers it can get that flavor delivered to its door.

2022

Franchise Program Launches

Hangry Joe's launches its franchise program, inviting passionate entrepreneurs to bring the hangry joes hot chicken experience to new cities across the United States.

2024

50,000 Guests Served
